Deeney admitted: "Obviously I am not going to be happy sitting on the bench because I am not that kind of person but everyone that came into the team did their job and added something to the game, which moving forward will only help because then you can't have people sulking - if that was to happen I mean - or questioning why they are not playing.
from left captain Deevey, Ighalo |
At the start of the season, no one expected the Nigerian to be an instant hit with fans expecting club captain Deeney and Vydra partnership to lead the clubs promotion chase. However, in the last seven weeks it has been Ighalo who has been at the forefront of sustaining the Golden Boys' promotion push with 12 goals in his last eight matches.
Ighalo now has 15 for the season; three more than Deeney, and it is a point which isn't lost on the striker from Birmingham.
The skipper lamented "Ighalo is the main man and everyone knows I want to be the main man," the confident Deeney acknowledged.
"In the vein of form he is in, everything he touches ends up in the net and it is a good thing because it makes me think 'right he is getting away from me and I need to catch up'.
"We laugh and joke about it but the team is more important than me. We have 25 lads and at some point someone is going to get injured or have a dip in form and then someone else needs to step up and thankfully we are doing that."
